Because you are in a completely different mindset when you’re deployed to a war zone, it can be difficult to transition back to a “civilian” mindset once you get back home. Furthermore, while you were gone your partner or other family members may have established new friendships, taken on more responsibilities, and established new roles for themselves in your family. Your children have grown and matured. Everyone will need to recognize such changed circumstances and make an effort to adjust to these new family realities.

As a result, specific personnel are assigned to assist families, many of whom understand these problems very well from personal experience. Their goal is to help provide support for family members throughout the deployment cycle. Although many Active Duty members and their families live on military bases or in military housing, over 40 percent do not. In addition, unlike Active Duty military members, the families of members of the National Guard and Reserve Troops are not enmeshed in a community that shares their common plight.

Suicide bombers are rampant, unleashing their vengeance at busy marketplaces, police stations, religious gatherings, and other public places, wounding dozens and taking many lives. You can’t help but become numb to the grisly and threatening reality of it. Although you’re not out on the roads or out in the neighborhoods, you still face real dangers that many tend to minimize because of the relative perceived sense of security and “comforts” available on FOBs or LSAs. These dangers include random, incoming, indirect fire that can occur many times a day, more days than not.
