We do not suggest that insecure attachment is synonymous with psychopathology. We do contend, however, that all personality disorders reflect insecure attachment strategies and that they are the result of severe attachment and separation deviations. The attachment experience of a child with an inadequately attuned parent or with a parent who cannot engage constructively in disruption–repair experiences is likely to be less secure and reliable than that of more fortunate children, and an insecure attachment does not provide robust support for the experience and expression of the real self.

But what was she all about? What was important to her? What motivated her? What did she believe in? Who was she? I knew I would not be able to answer those questions right away, but I could ponder them in the context of what I already knew regarding her early history and what she told me of her recent years as our hour together unrolled. RELEVANT FAMILY HISTORY AND PAST HISTORY The youngest of three children, Terri was adopted at birth into an uppermiddle-class family. The other two were boys (both biological children) and Terri’s adoptive parents, who had longed for a daughter, were delighted by her arrival.

This was a realistic appraisal, but it didn’t tell us much about how this had come to pass, let alone how to proceed. Terri was a bright and talented person who grew up within the structure, safety, and apparent security of a conservative upper-middle-class family. Yet, it was clear that the problems of attachment and separation that brought Terri to my waiting room—the aimlessness, the dependency, the self-destructiveness, the lack of self-esteem—were characteristic structural and behavioral reflections of the developmental detour called borderline personality disorder.
